Ghosties Part 4: Banshees

I've been working on a quick and effective way to paint my ethereals and I think I've cracked it. Compared to my previous versions, these came out much more vibrant and with better contrast, while still being quick and easy to actually paint.

These were painted using oils (phthalo blue, lemon yellow, and white) over a blue undercoat with a turquoise zenithal(ish) highlight (the paints were Molotow petrol and turquoise). My main problems were that I wasn't quite patient enough to let everything dry enough to apply the final highlights of white (which would have helped me get sharper lines, I think), and I thought I could get away without painting the bases a different colour after the zenithal turquoise undercoat. The former I will probably make again, the latter I hope I will not. Covering up the turquoise with greys and browns was not easy.

Sepulchral Guard Mark II

Ages ago I painted a set of Sepulchral Guard from the original Warhammer Underworlds Shadespire set. I really enjoy painting bone, so I've painted the same set again.

I've kept to the same scheme as last time but this was a new experience for me as I used 100% oil paints (after the undercoat). I absolutely loved it. I wouldn't be surprised if acrylics took a back seat for some time while I play around with these some more. If you haven't tried painting (not just shading/staining) with oils yet, I highly recommend it.

Ghosties Part 3: Chainrasps

Of course I picked up the first issue of the Mortal Realms magazine. Don't particularly like Stormcast and don't collect age of sigmar in general, but absolutely picked up some ghosts and sigmarines for three quid because who wouldn't?

Anyway, continuing my project refining my ethereal colour scheme, here's my oil paint and metal scheme as seen on a Chainrasp Horde.

To give you an idea of how the scheme works on an army level, here's a shot of all the units painted in this scheme as they sit in my cabinet.

I'm now very confident in how I'll apply this scheme to my wraiths. One small change I will make is to keep more of the green hue in the shadows, but obviously for these guys I couldn't make that change without making them substantially different from the glaivewraiths and spirit host already painted.

With the testing finished, next step is to break out the wraiths themselves!

Ghosties Part 2: Glaivewraiths

Time for some more ghosts! A little while ago, I painted up an old spirit host model as a test for an ethereal colour scheme. Since I have a serious plastic-crack addiction I had even more ghosts knocking around that don't have a place in my Vampire Counts army, and I decided to do some more tests of the colours and get rid of some unsightly greys at the same time. Here's the first unit of my "spare" ghosts: Glaivewraith Stalkers.

Just one on his own. Not photographing all five individually because once you've seen one you've kind of seen them all.

The paints are the same as my spirit host but with a metallic element. Orange rust adds a nice warm contrast to the cool turquoise and makes a more visually interesting scheme for an army.

Happy Spooktober! Part 2: Sepulchral Guard

All the Underworlds Warbands have gorgeous models, but there's no way I could pass up getting my hands on the first undead warband GW released!

One thing that really excited me about Underworlds is the idea that I might get an actual entire force completed in good time (because it's only like, 3 to 9 models!). But, as usual, I've instead sat on these guys for about 2 years before finally getting them done. Still, we're working our way through the backlog and these guys are looking great!
